4 Places to Eat in Split, Croatia

Bokeria, Split, Croatia

Today's forecast: 99% chance of wine

Her kommer yderligere fire lækre grunde til at besøge havnebyen Split.

English: Some times a half written post pops up that for some reason hasn’t been completely finished. This post is one of those, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get a few tips for restaurants and great eats in Split, Croatia. Summer is just around the corner and there are lots of reasons to visit beautiful Croatia during your summer vacation. Just check out my previous island hopping posts 1 and 2. Here are four additional delicious reasons to visit the port city Split.

Before arriving in Croatia I’d been warned about how miserable their food was: ‘Bad pizza and tasteless pasta dishes’ like I wrote about in this post, so I was (fortunately) pleasantly surprised.

Too me food, restaurant visits and new food experiences is such a big part of traveling. A major part as a matter of fact. I can’t always remember what I saw or experienced on a given day, but the same day’s meals can magically help me combine days with other experiences or places. That’s how I feel about Split, I can remember exactly where I ate and what I had, and suddenly the rest of the trip’s experiences fall into place little by little.

Bokeria, Split, Croatia

1. Bokeria

The very first place I ate when we arrived in Split a sad and rainy day was Bokeria. Both Sam and I had read up on where to eat in Split, Bokeria was on that list. The restaurant is pretty big and divided into to floors. The place was cramped with hungry lunch guests, but we managed to score ourselves a table on the top floor. Here I got the loveliest, crunchiest and freshest beef salad with a side of rosé.

When we returned to Split a week later we went back to drink more rosé a late night after dinner, which the place was quite perfect for too.

2. Villa Spiza

Villa Spiza was one of those places I’d read about in my Lonely Planet – and I can reveal that other might have done the same. At least we spotted several other tourists with the iconic blue guide book in their hands and hungry looks. We quickly learned that since Villa Spiza is a very small restaurant and extremely popular among the locals, you’ll have to be lucky to get yourself a table as a tourist. But we were determined and found a spot outside to wait until we could get a table.

It turned out to be so worth the wait. The food was wonderful and the atmosphere in the tiny restaurant with the open bar/kitchen was happy and cozy. We were quite hungry from the wait, so we decided to share among all of us and quickly ordered a bunch of different dishes: Grilled shrimps, baked peppers with feta cheese and salad, risotto with mussels and stuffed eggplants.

It might every well have been the best meal of the entire trip!

3. Luka – Ice cream & cakes

English: On a sweet note is Luka, a tiny ice cream parlor on the square behind the theater, we were tipped about by a local. Luka serves ice cream in fun and different taste combinations such as lavender and honey, rosemary & vanilla, apple pie, panacota raspberry, blueberry, cheesecake, mojito, figs, plums, orange & carrot. The flavors vary from day to day and the selection is limited, but good.

If you like ice cream, then Luka is definitely worth a visit!

4. Ufo Oil Bar

Perfekte feriegaver!

I ended my vacation on a food high. My very last meal in Split was enjoyed at Ufo Oil Bar and consisted of a lovely tapas place, which we again shared. I’ve never really shared food in restaurants before, but Australians (at least the ones I traveled with) are big on sharing food, and I understand why. It’s a much more relaxed and social way to share a meal. And you get to try much more than you normally would have.

I was, as the amount of photos bare witness to, excited about the decor, and the entire restaurant was super cool. In addition to enjoying delicious tapas and a great glass of wine, you can also buy various Croatian specialities such as oils, wine and caramelized orange peel. Perfect vacation gifts!

Uden yderligere introduktion her er 10 skønne steder at spise i New York.

English: Better late than never seems appropriate with this post, which have been an astonishing five months on its way. The places are selected, the photos were edited and made ready ages ago, but getting all of the impressions and words in line took a while. We were so fortunate to enjoy lots of really great meals, while visiting the Big Apple in spring, and while I have already shared my favorite breakfast places in New York, it’s now time for a little culinary journey back to New York, and have a look at the 10 places I think you should visit the next time you’re in the city that never sleeps.

There’s something for every taste and wallet: fancy French, surprisingly good fast food, Mexican favorites, the healthy option and the funny eat. So without further ado here are 10 lovely places to eat in New York.

1. Bouley

English: Bouley is a fancy French restaurant in Tribeca in lower Manhattan, where we had the most incredible birthday dinner for my girlfriend Sam’s 30th birthday. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with arched ceilings, white tablecloths, classic table setting and fresh flowers. However, their entrance was my favorite. You step into a room with a type of bookcase with small long compartments filled with red apples. The smell was just incredible.

The food was fantastic and an experience for all the senses. I was especially in love with the bread cart with over 10 types of different bread, although it might seem like a waste of good appetite to have bread with such a delicious meal.

The dress code is casual celebratory. Jackets are required for men and short are not allowed.

I had done some research from home and found a recommendation about Co. (Company) if you like pizza – and I love pizza! Co. didn’t disappoint. They serve the most delicious pizzas with fun and interesting toppings, no salad or bolognese here.

Not only did the open modern restaurant have the friendliest staff, but it was also a really cozy and relaxing atmosphere and incredible pizzas or pies, as they call pizza in New York.

Try their meat ball pie with veal meat balls, caramelized onions and olives. It’s seriously a slide of heaven!

Shake Shack

3. Shake Shack

Shake Shack is fast food in a good way. I don’t think I’ve ever such a tasty burger for that amount like at Shake Shack. Although I don’t quiet think the place can’t compete with a quality burger in Copenhagen at places like Haché or Cocks’n’Cows, I was still pleasantly surprised with how well made the burger and tasty was. I tried their SmokeShack burger, which has a lovely smoked taste from the smoked applewood bacon and some spicy sauce, while the boy got the traditional ShackBurger – and lots of crispy fries of course.

Shake Shack is a chain spreading all over Manhattan, from Upper West Side to Battery Park, so there’s plenty of opportunity to find one of their restaurants when the burger craving hits.

4. Bubby’s High Line

På Bubby’s High Line får du velsmagende amerikanske retter på ægte diner manér lavet på lokale råvarer. Placeret i New Yorks Meat Packing District bør du tage et bord udenfor og lave lidt people watching, mens du nyder din mad.

At Bubby’s High Line you get tasty American dishes in true diner style made from local produce. Placed in New York’s Meat Packing District, you should take a table outside and do some people watching while you enjoy your food. I’ve also heard really good things about their breakfast, which I unfortunately haven’t tried yet.

Grab a cocktail with your dinner. I can recommend their dark and stormy.

5. Saleya

I have rarely gotten such well-seasoned and tasty food, as the boy and I got one early evening at Saleya, before heading to Broadway. I got their Kafka sliders, which consisted of mini pita bread with lamb and beef patties, while the boy got one of their sandwiches with spicy sausage. It was probably one of my favorite meals during our trip, and I’ll definitely be back.

6. Bantam Bagels

At the little bagel shop in Greenwich Village you can get filled bagels balls. Yes, it might seem a little strange with an entire shop just with the holes in bagels, but Bantam Bagels definitely worth a visit.

Some bagel balls are savory, while others are sweet. Try ‘Grandma Jojo’ with tomato and fresh basil pesto cream cheese and their ‘The Bleeker Street’ with pepperoni and marinara mozzarella cream cheese. It’s the funnest snack, when you’re feeling a bit hungry.

7. The Grey Dog

The Grey Dog is close to the ultimate New Yorker café with its cool decor and well-known menu with all the American classics. They unfortunately were out of blueberry pancakes, when we visited the café, but their strawberry pancakes did the trick. Their coffee, which isn’t good in general in New York, was pretty good and served in a minor bucket.

We (unfortunately) just got a few starts at The Smile, because it was really, really good, but on that particular day we weren’t all that hungry. We shared their Moroccan lamb meat balls in a spicy tomato sauce and the amazing trio of dips with grilled carrot, almond and yellow split pea with lots of bread. The whole things tasted to incredible that we almost licked the little bowls, and promised each other to come back the next time we’re in the city.

Whole Foods

9. Whole Foods

Whole Foods is my favorite supermarket. I LOVE Whole Foods! For those of you, who aren’t familiar with Whole Foods, it’s not like any other regular supermarket, but a little piece of eco-heaven filled with delicious and fresh vegetables, exotic fruits and all the ingredients you could ever imagine.

Furthermore every Whole Foods store has a department with pre-made food, where you can mix your own salads, buy all kinds of sandwiches, soups and hot dishes, there’s freshly made sushi, freshly baked bread and a broad variety of cakes and lots treats. When I lived in the States I often grab lunch or dinner from Whole Foods, and when we were in New York we visited the large Whole Foods in several floors by Union Square quite a few times.

Pick up a salad or a hot dish and find a seat on the stairs by Union Square and enjoy the buzzing sound of people talking and watch the day’s entertainment, whether it’s someone dancing, sining or making tricks on a skateboard, something is always going on.

If you like Mexican food stop by La Esquina. The place doesn’t look like much from the outside, especially on a gloomy rainy day, when we were there. Actually the place most of all looks like a stranded food truck, but the food is amazing. I choose few tacos (one with rotisserie chicken and one with steak), while the boy got himself a quesadilla de chorizo. Various hot sauces are standing on the table, so you can get your meal extra hot.

The place is busy at lunch, so get there early and snatch up one of the few seat in the window sill, and enjoy your food, while people are lining up outside.

Best Breakfast/Brunch in New York

maj 9, 2014 at 11:19

Flat Iron

English: I love breakfast. If I could only choose one kind of meal to eat for the rest of my life, it would probably be breakfast. Especially if I could choose from an American brunch menu (yeah, brunch counts). I’d probably weight the same as a baby hippo after a short while, but it would taste good!

So in order to properly kick off my little series of guides for New York, I’ll start with the most important meal of the day, breakfast. I’ve gathered my (and the boy’s) favorite breakfast places, they aren’t exactly low carb, but we were on vacation, then you’re allowed. If you’re going to New York soon, you should write these ones down ;)

Lemon ricotta pancakes

Lemon ricotta pancakes

At Flat Top I got the most delicious lemon ricotta pancakes, while the boy got a brunch burger with parmesan herb tater tots and our co-eater got French toast. All the deliciousness was consumed with a strawberry fizz for me and a lemon drink, which I unfortunately have forgotten the name of, for the two others. I love a menu with a great drink section for brunch, that’s something we Danes could learn something from. Why not start your Sunday slightly buzzed?

In Brooklyn we happened to come across Putnam’s Pub & Cooker, and just from the look of their brunch menu on the sign out on the street, we could tell that it was a place we needed to try. So we did – and it was good. While the boy enjoyed a brunch burger (cool concept, although it’s technically just a burger with a fried egg), I got Eggs Benedict with spinach and a side order of applewood smoked bacon. I tell you, it was the best bacon I’ve E-V-E-R had. We sat outside and enjoyed the sun, while watching people walking by and just enjoyed a quiet morning. If the weather is bad, the try one of their cute stalls inside.

Stop by Brooklyn a Saturday or Sunday morning, get yourself a table outside in the sun and eat yourself happy(ier) in Putnam’s delicious brunch selection. They serve brunch Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM.

A must on our eating list in New York was a real bagel. With the help of Google I found Zucker’s Bagels & Smoked Fish, which daily makes their own bagels from scratch. They are hand-rolled and kettle-boiled and everything. Here we both got a bagel with scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon and cheddar. It was a massive thing to get through, I actually gave up, but it was good. Next time I’m trying one with cream cheese and salmon.

Maybe not the prettiest presentation, but I promise you I heard angles singing, when I took my first mouthful of my brioche French Toast with banana, pecans and syrup. It was our first morning in New York, and what a way to kick off the day. After having nearly finish the entire portion I didn’t feel hungry until late that afternoon. The coffee was served in something that most of all resembled a bucket in size, so I must admit my heart was pumping faster that day. But I’ll be dreaming about that breakfast in a long time from now!

In New York’s Meatpacking District we found a cute café with outdoor serving with met our requirements of the day: It had to be outside and we wanted brunch. I had the Florentine baked eggs with spinach and parmigiano, and the boy had a scrambled eggs and cheese croissant. While the boy wasn’t too impressed with his own choice, we were both pretty excited about mine. The dish was served in a burning hot pan with plenty of bread and butter on the side.

My friend Sam introduced us to The Butcher’s Daughter in Nolita, which is one of her favorite places in NYC. Even thought it has just passed 12, and they now were serving lunch, Sam and I succeed in getting them to make us smashed avocado on toast with scrambled eggs. The boy had their (we later discovered) famous kale salad, also served with avocado. The food was really good, I could seriously live of just avocado on toast, but I have to admit their green juice tasted a bit to healthy for my taste (Haha).

It is a really cool café with seating space long the windows and by the communal table inside, and lots of little café tables out front. The decor is that amazing combination of rustic and New York-cool. Their restroom is worth a visit to check out their decorations alone.
